Everything you need to know about using Ew AI — from getting started to fixing common issues.
Ew AI uses AI to transform photos of your food into deliberately revolting versions of themselves — a darkly comedic way to make unhealthy eating a little less appealing.
Tap the photo zone on the home screen. You can snap a fresh shot with your camera or choose an existing image from your photo library. Hit "Retake" anytime if you're not happy with it.
Once your food photo is loaded, tap the button to kick off the analysis. Our AI will identify what you're eating, estimate the calories, and craft a uniquely revolting transformation — specific to that food.
The results screen shows a side-by-side BEFORE / AFTER comparison with the food's real name, its new disgusting name, a calorie count, and a multi-sentence breakdown of everything that makes it revolting.
Tap the share button to save or send a composite before/after image — perfect for TikTok, Instagram, or sending to friends who need a reality check about their lunch.
Quick answers to the most common questions about Ew AI.
Ew AI uses GPT-4o Vision to analyze your photo, so image quality matters. Make sure the food is well-lit and clearly visible in the frame — avoid blurry, distant, or very dark shots. If the food fills most of the frame, results are significantly better.
The transformation is specific to the type of food. Meats, fried foods, and processed snacks tend to produce the most extreme results. Fruits and simple whole foods produce subtler changes. Try different foods to find what generates the most horrifying outcomes.
Calorie estimates are based on a typical serving of the identified food. They're meant to be informative, not clinical — treat them as a rough ballpark. For precise nutritional tracking, use a dedicated nutrition app alongside Ew AI.
Processing usually takes 10–30 seconds depending on your connection. First, the AI analyzes what the food is (a few seconds), then generates the disgusting transformation image (the slower part). You'll see rotating status messages to keep you entertained while you wait.
Camera access lets you photograph food live. Photo library access lets you pick an existing photo. Neither permission is used for anything beyond this — photos are processed for the scan and never stored. You can revoke either permission at any time in iOS Settings.
Yes — Ew AI supports both iPhone and iPad. The layout scales to larger screens, and the share sheet is adapted for iPad's popover presentation style.
No. Both the food analysis and image generation rely on AI APIs that require an active internet connection. A stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection gives the best experience.
Yes. Tap the share button on the results screen and choose "Save Image." This saves a combined BEFORE/AFTER composite image directly to your Photos app.
Solutions for the most frequent problems users run into.
This is almost always a network issue. Check your internet connection and try again. If the problem persists, restart the app and attempt a new scan. Heavily blurred or very dark photos can occasionally cause the analysis to fail — try a cleaner shot.
AI image generation is slower on weaker connections. If it's been more than a minute with no result, exit to the home screen and try again with a fresh photo. Moving to a stronger Wi-Fi signal almost always resolves this.
Make sure you're on the results screen after a completed scan. On iPad, the share sheet appears as a popover — if it doesn't show, try tapping the button again. If sharing still fails, try saving to your camera roll instead and sharing from the Photos app.
If you previously denied the permission prompt, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera (or Photos) → Ew AI and toggle access on. The app requires both permissions to function.
Force-quit the app by swiping it away in the app switcher, then reopen it. If crashes happen repeatedly, try reinstalling the app. If the problem continues, email us with your device model, iOS version, and a description of what you were doing when it crashed.
